Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a swipe at the Congress on Wednesday after the party failed to win a single seat in the Legislative Council elections held across four states using ballot papers.
In a post on X, Modi asked how many seats the Congress had secured in the elections, adding a face-with-monocle emoji to underline his sarcastic remark.
“MLC elections in 28 seats in four major states: Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. Elections were held using ballot papers. Guess how many seats Congress won?” he wrote.
The elections covered 28 seats across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka. The Congress contested 12 seats but failed to secure any victory.
The party suffered a severe setback in Karnataka, losing all four of the seats it had previously held. The opposition Janata Dal (Secular) won one seat, while the BJP retained three.
The elections were held on October 23, with counting beginning on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the BJP and its allies criticised the Congress over its repeated allegations of electoral irregularities and demands to replace electronic voting machines with ballot papers.
Modi’s remarks highlighted the Congress’s poor performance in elections conducted through the very voting method the opposition party has repeatedly advocated.
