Jamnagar, Gujarat, is home to Reliance Industries’ massive refining complex, which has a combined crude-processing capacity of around 1.4 million barrels per day. Its ability to process different types of crude oil and produce diesel and other fuels makes it an important player in global energy markets.
The US is also concerned about disruptions to fuel supplies amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries have affected energy infrastructure, prompting US President Donald Trump to push for a halt to such attacks.
Meanwhile, India has reduced the export duty on diesel from ₹16 to ₹8.50 per litre, effective October 16, potentially making overseas sales more attractive.
Reliance Industries is also backing a proposed refinery project in Brownsville, Texas, adding another dimension to its energy ties with the United States.
However, there is no official confirmation that Rubio’s visit is intended to secure diesel supplies from India. The trip is expected to cover broader energy cooperation and investment opportunities.
With fuel prices under pressure, Jamnagar’s refining capacity could play a significant role in discussions about global energy supply and market stability.
