Riyadh: Saudi Arabia is facing growing uncertainty over military support against Iran-backed Houthi forces after Pakistan appeared to distance itself from possible military intervention and US President Donald Trump declined Riyadh’s request for direct strikes.
According to reports, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump twice as Houthi forces advanced towards the Red Sea port of Mokha. Trump reportedly ruled out direct US military action, while Washington offered intelligence support. The US administration said its priority remained Iran and the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
Pakistan had earlier signalled that its Mecca Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia could be activated if the Yemen conflict spread into Saudi territory. However, Islamabad later clarified that the pact was defensive and denied that military strikes against the Houthis were under consideration.
The development leaves Riyadh in a difficult position as fighting intensifies. Saudi-backed Yemeni forces have faced renewed Houthi advances, raising concerns over maritime security near the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
With Pakistan reluctant to intervene, the US avoiding direct action and Turkey carrying its own regional ambitions, Saudi Arabia faces limited options as it seeks to contain the escalating threat.
