The Delhi High Court has pulled up government authorities and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) over the deadly building collapse in Satya Niketan, directing a high-level inquiry into the incident.
The court asked the MCD to determine whether the collapsed building had received the required construction permissions and to fix responsibility on officials if any violations or lapses are found.
Expressing serious concern over the safety of students living in paying guest accommodations, the High Court also ordered an audit of PG hostels across Delhi. It said authorities must introduce proper regulations if no adequate framework currently exists.
The court observed that unauthorised construction and additional floors could pose a major threat to residents. It also stressed the need for increased student hostel facilities in Delhi.
Seven people have died in the Satya Niketan building collapse, while 12 others have been rescued. Several agencies continue rescue and investigation efforts.
Meanwhile, the MCD has suspended a deputy commissioner and four engineers, while three people have been arrested in connection with the case. The matter will next be heard on September 26.
