Kolkata: The political fight over delayed financial assistance under West Bengal’s Annapurna Yojana has intensified, with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee accusing BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari of threatening to restrict her movement.

The dispute began after Mamata raised concerns about women who claimed they had not received the promised Rs 3,000 monthly assistance despite being eligible. She discussed the issue during a Facebook Live session and questioned the delay in payments.

Suvendu later criticised Mamata during a press conference. He reportedly told her to remain on Facebook and stay inside her home, adding that he would ensure she could not leave.

Mamata strongly objected to the statement and questioned its meaning on X. She asked whether the remark amounted to a threat of house arrest, intimidation or political persecution.

She also questioned who had the authority to decide whether an opposition leader could move freely in a constitutional democracy.

The exchange has added another layer to the ongoing political confrontation between the two leaders. The dispute comes as concerns over delayed welfare payments continue to draw attention in the state.

The allegations and political claims made by both sides have not been independently established. Further developments are expected as the row over the Annapurna Yojana continues.
