The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of intense rainfall across several parts of India as the southwest monsoon remains active. Gujarat, Maharashtra and Odisha are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated places likely to witness extremely heavy showers.
The alert comes after Gujarat’s Santalpur in Patan district recorded 390 mm of rainfall within 24 hours. Nearby areas, including Radhanpur and Deodar, also received significant rain.
The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh, Konkan and Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and parts of northeast India.
Thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds reaching 40–50 kmph are likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gangetic West Bengal.
According to the IMD, the current weather pattern is driven by two active low-pressure systems and a strong monsoon trough stretching across central India. The department has also warned of possible flash floods, waterlogging and surface runoff in parts of Gujarat, Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay alert and follow official weather updates.
