Chennai: Malayalam filmmaker Tharun Moorthy, who recently confirmed his reunion with superstar Mohanlal following the massive success of Thudarum, has shared an intriguing update about their upcoming collaboration, sparking widespread excitement among fans.

Taking to social media platform X, the director posted a photograph with his core team and wrote, “Strong squad, smart plan, unstoppable mindset. #L366 @Mohanlal.” The post suggests that the groundwork for the project is firmly in place and that the film is moving steadily towards production.

The collaboration was first officially announced last December after Thudarum emerged as a blockbuster. At the time, Moorthy had described the reunion as a fresh creative journey, stating that he and Mohanlal were embarking on another voyage backed by Ashiq Usman Productions, with filming set to begin soon.

The latest update has intensified speculation among fans, many of whom believe the new film could be a sequel to one of Moorthy’s earlier works. The buzz gained momentum as the director had earlier revealed, during last year’s Onam celebrations, that he was in the process of developing a sequel inspired by real-life incidents and personal encounters.

In that Onam message, Moorthy had spoken about returning to writing the second part of one of his films, describing the phase as creatively significant and emotionally fulfilling. Though he stopped short of making an official announcement at the time, he hinted that more details would be revealed soon.

With Moorthy now teaming up again with Mohanlal, fans are increasingly speculating that the new project could be a sequel to Thudarum, the crime action drama that took the Kerala box office by storm.

Released last year, Thudarum starred Mohanlal and Shobana in the lead roles and marked their reunion after nearly 19 years, making it a highly anticipated project. The iconic pair had previously delivered several classics, including Manichithrathazhu, Thenmavi Kombathu and Mambazhakkalam.

The film was also significant as Mohanlal’s 360th career outing and his 56th collaboration with Shobana. Directed by Tharun Moorthy, Thudarum went on to shatter box office records, becoming the first Malayalam film to collect over ₹100 crore exclusively from the Kerala market.

Celebrating the milestone, Mohanlal had shared a poster declaring the achievement as “a new chapter in Kerala box office history” and thanked audiences for their overwhelming support. The actor later penned an emotional note expressing gratitude to fans and the entire team, crediting the film’s success to collective effort, honesty in storytelling and artistic dedication.

While official details about the new project remain under wraps, Tharun Moorthy’s latest update has clearly heightened anticipation. With a strong creative team in place and Mohanlal once again at the centre, expectations are high for another major cinematic event from the successful duo.
