Union Minister of State L Murugan resigned from the Union government on Tuesday, saying he wants to focus on strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Murugan requested to be relieved of his ministerial duties and allowed to relinquish his Rajya Sabha membership. He held the Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs portfolios.
Murugan said he wanted to travel across Tamil Nadu, visit villages, meet people and work closely with party workers to expand the BJP’s grassroots presence. He also expressed his ambition to help the party win more Lok Sabha seats from the state in 2029.
His decision comes amid speculation about a possible Union Cabinet reshuffle, although no official date has been announced.
Reflecting on his political journey, Murugan thanked Modi for giving him the opportunity to serve in the Union government. He said he came from a poor family in Tamil Nadu and had spent nearly three decades associated with the ABVP and BJP.
He also highlighted initiatives promoting Tamil culture, including Kashi Tamil Sangamam and the installation of the Sengol in Parliament.
Murugan said he now wanted to dedicate himself to strengthening the BJP at the grassroots level across Tamil Nadu.
