A political controversy has erupted in Punjab after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches at several locations, including Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s camp office.

Mann accused the BJP-led Centre of using central agencies to target his government ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. He alleged that the action was politically motivated and claimed that the BJP was worried about the Aam Aadmi Party’s support in the state.

AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab chief Aman Arora, backed Mann and also linked the raids to the upcoming elections.

The BJP rejected the allegations, saying the CBI investigation was ordered by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. BJP leader Tarun Chugh said the agency was investigating corruption-related allegations and urged Mann to cooperate with the process.

The case reportedly involves an officer on special duty to the Chief Minister and other officials. The allegations under investigation include possible interference in postings, tenders, licences, policy decisions and revenue matters.

Meanwhile, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal leaders also criticised the AAP government and demanded accountability.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the CBI action has intensified the political battle in Punjab.
