The Delhi High Court has dismissed 15 petitions seeking FIRs against several political leaders over alleged hate speeches linked to the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.
The petitions, filed after the violence, also sought an investigation by a Special Investigation Team into claims that speeches made during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) contributed to the unrest. Over fifty people died as a result of the rioting.
A bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Manoj Jain rejected all the pleas on Monday. Some petitions also sought action against police officials accused of failing to perform their duties during the violence.
One petition sought FIRs against BJP leaders Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur, Parvesh Verma and Abhay Verma.
Another petition named Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Amanatullah Khan, AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi and former MLA Warris Pathan.
