Deogarh: A young man was allegedly beaten and set on fire by his girlfriend’s family after he visited her house late at night in the Reamal area of Odisha’s Deogarh district.
Silu Ray from Babarakot village has been identified as the deceased.
According to reports, Silu had completed his engineering studies and worked locally before moving to Mumbai around four months ago. He had joined a private organisation there and returned home from Mumbai on Wednesday morning.
Later that evening, he reportedly told his family that he was going towards Deogarh and went to meet his girlfriend near Lakshmi Chhak in Reamal.
Family members of the girl allegedly spotted him at the residence, following which a quarrel broke out. Silu was allegedly assaulted and severely beaten before petrol was reportedly poured over him and he was set on fire.
Following the incident, Reamal police reached the spot and detained the girl and her parents. Police have also sealed the crime scene.
A scientific team and sniffer dogs are expected to assist the investigation. Silu’s elder brother, Yashodhar Ray, has filed a written complaint at Reamal police station.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing.
