Former West Bengal Deputy Speaker and Trinamool Congress leader Asish Banerjee was found hanging at a party office in Birbhum on Sunday, according to initial reports.

Banerjee was a five-time MLA from Rampurhat and represented the constituency from 2001 to 2026. He lost the 2026 Assembly election to BJP’s Dhruba Saha.

His body was recovered from a TMC office near his Rampurhat residence. Police have begun an investigation, and the body has been sent for postmortem. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further details are awaited as the probe continues.
