Debagarh: Nine schoolgirls reportedly displayed unusual behaviour during an Independence Day programme at a government school in Debagarh district on Saturday, causing concern among students, teachers and parents.

The incident took place at Government UG UP School in Padianali village under Barkote block shortly after the flag-hoisting ceremony and cultural programme began.

According to school authorities, one girl suddenly began crying and behaving unusually. Within minutes, eight other girls reportedly showed similar symptoms.

Three students were taken to Barkote Community Health Centre (CHC) for medical treatment, while the families of the remaining six took them to a village temple for traditional rituals.

Officials said all nine girls are currently stable. Debagarh District Education Officer Gendera Kujur visited the Barkote CHC after being informed about the incident and reviewed the situation.

Health officials said the students were being monitored and there was no immediate cause for concern.

The exact reason behind the girls’ behaviour has not yet been established. Authorities are continuing to assess the incident and the condition of the affected students.
