Shiromani Akali Dal chief and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal sustained a minor injury in a sharp-weapon attack at a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, on Thursday.
The incident occurred around 1.45 pm at Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji Mugat, where Badal had gone to pay obeisance. Police detained 62-year-old Jaspal Singh Tejpal, a lawyer from Pune, soon after the incident.
Badal suffered an injury to his right hand and was taken to Yashosai Hospital. Doctors said he was out of danger and undergoing treatment. His security officer, Inspector Santosh Kendre, also suffered minor injuries while trying to protect him.
Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam said the government would investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and check for any security lapses.
SAD leader Sanjeev Talwar termed the incident a serious security concern. BJP leaders Ravneet Singh Bittu and Kewal Singh Dhillon also condemned the attack and wished Badal a speedy recovery.
The incident comes months after Badal survived a shooting attempt at the Golden Temple in Amritsar in December 2024.
