Pakistan is facing fresh scrutiny after reports claimed that access to Al Jazeera was restricted following the broadcaster’s extensive coverage of protests and election-related unrest in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK). While several users and activists reported that the news outlet’s website became inaccessible in parts of Pakistan, authorities have not officially confirmed any ban.
Al Jazeera’s reports highlighted allegations of low voter turnout, internet shutdowns, heavy security deployment, and claims of electoral irregularities during the region’s assembly elections. The broadcaster also featured voices of local residents expressing dissatisfaction with the political situation.
Opposition figures and activists have alleged that the reported restriction reflects growing pressure on independent journalism in Pakistan. Some also claimed that foreign journalists now face tighter reporting requirements outside major cities, although no official advisory has been publicly verified.
The unrest in POK has continued for weeks, with protesters demanding greater political rights, transparency, and accountability. India has also raised concerns over the situation, urging the international community to examine reports of force used against protesters.
As of now, Pakistan has not issued an official statement confirming any restrictions on Al Jazeera’s services.
