The Tamil Nadu government has approached the Supreme Court, alleging that Karnataka has failed to release Cauvery water as directed by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC).
The petition was filed on the instructions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay after Karnataka reportedly did not comply with orders to release 3,500 cusecs of water per second at Biligundlu from July 29 to August 12. According to Tamil Nadu, the actual inflow during this period ranged between 158 and 550 cusecs, far below the mandated level.
Tamil Nadu has argued that Karnataka has sufficient water in its major reservoirs, including Krishnaraja Sagar, Kabini, Harangi, and Hemavathi, with a combined storage of 77.537 TMC as of August 3. The state also cited strong rainfall in the Cauvery catchment, claiming there is no practical obstacle to releasing the required water.
Seeking judicial intervention, Tamil Nadu has requested the Supreme Court to direct Karnataka to comply with the CWMA’s orders and ensure the timely release of Cauvery water in accordance with the established sharing mechanism.
