Bhubaneswar: In a significant push towards smarter road safety enforcement, the Odisha Transport Department has expanded its Intelligent Enforcement Management System (IEMS) to four additional highway corridors. Automated e-Challan issuance for traffic violations will come into effect from August 1, aiming to improve compliance with traffic rules and reduce road accidents.
The newly covered routes include Manguli–Sambalpur, Sambalpur–Rourkela, Brahmapur–Taptapani, and Brahmapur–Bhanjanagar. The expansion follows directions from the Commerce and Transport Department to strengthen road safety through technology-driven surveillance and enforcement.
The IEMS relies on advanced camera systems and intelligent analytics to automatically detect traffic violations without human intervention. The system will monitor offences such as overspeeding, riding without a helmet, and wrong-side driving. Once a violation is detected, an electronic challan will be generated with photographic evidence, along with details such as the vehicle registration number, date and time of the offence, location, applicable speed limit, and the nature of the violation.
Officials believe the expanded surveillance network will encourage responsible driving, enhance compliance with traffic regulations, and help reduce road fatalities on Odisha’s highways.
The State Transport Authority has urged motorists to strictly follow speed limits, wear helmets while riding two-wheelers, avoid driving on the wrong side of the road, and comply with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. Vehicle owners have also been advised to update their registered mobile numbers and addresses to ensure they receive e-Challan notifications without delay.
The latest expansion marks another step in Odisha’s ongoing efforts to leverage technology for safer and more efficient road transport management.
